Customer Story: Bar-Ilan University

Digital Transformation of Assessment with Tomax

About Bar-Ilan University Founded in 1955, Bar-Ilan University is one of Israel’s leading institutions of higher education, with around 20,000 students and 700 faculty, making it the Second largest university in the country. Seeking “Impact beyond Excellence,” they created challenge-driven research centers that embrace practical research designed to change and improve the human experience.

The Challenge

The Digital Transformation

In its pursuit of innovation, Bar-Ilan University set its sights on the digital horizon. The institution recognised the pressing need to transform its assessment processes, and ensure a future where assessments would be more efficient and consistent, enhancing student experiences and reducing workload for teaching staff.

However, the prospect of such a shift was daunting. With a sprawling student body and a substantial faculty, embracing digital assessment required overcoming deep-seated reservations about change. The college was well aware of the learning curve involved in not just adopting a new system, but also fundamentally altering their approach to assessments.

Stakeholder name and job role’ led the project and was acutely aware that engaging teaching staff and assessment stakeholders would be instrumental to the project’s success.

How we supported Bar-Ilan

1. Streamlined the feedback process for students.

Bar-Ilan Universities goal was to streamline the notebook feedback process for

students. TomaScan allows them to scan and upload feedback easily to the student

portal, for students to view and dispute online.

2. Implemented a solution to easily grade exams and provide quick feedback.

Bar-Ilan University wanted the ability for educators to easily and quickly grade exams and

to provide results and feedback efficiently. Our innovate TomaGrade system

allows them to achieve this.

3. Provided security for online exams that student’s can take at home.

With the COVID-19 outbreak, Bar-Ilan University needed a way for students to securely

take exams at home. TomaEtest allows this whilst keeping exam integrity.

Participants have access to a Text Reader which is designed to assist users with visual impairments, reading disabilities, or those who prefer auditory learning. It converts written content into spoken words, enabling users to listen to the text instead of reading it on screen. Operating the tool is straightforward for test takers: they can easily highlight the desired text and simply press play to have the text read aloud through their speakers or headphones.

We are continually evaluating and developing our services, web products, and solutions to improve against accessibility and design standards and best practices.

We are undergoing a WACAG Audit and will publish our accessibility statement once available. We are accessibility accredited by the Ministry of Education for our work in universities in the Middle East.
